A Beginner's Guide to Domain Names
| Most of us often take domain names for granted. Yes we know what they mean, but let's accept that we don't fully understand all of the details involved. If you are one of those aspirants who want to run their own online business, you will be needing a domain name to build your credibility. Domain names are sometimes used to make a statement, and it also gives yourself a unique identity on the Internet. You can use domain names to collect a residual income, or you can buy and sell domain names as investments. Basically, a domain name is an easy-to-remember name, made up of letters and/or numbers, that points to a particular IP address. In short, it is the website's address. It always have 2 or more parts, separated by periods (called dots). The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general. Take this for an example, "clickreviews.org" is the address of the ClickReviews Web site; it's also the site's domain name. There are three levels of domain names: the first level is the “extension” part of the name “.org.” The second level would be “clickreviews.org.” And the third level would be “www.clickreviews.org.” A domain name "extension" is called a top-level domain (TLD). You must choose a top-level domain according to what country you're in, and what kind of organization you have. The “.org” is originally intended for use by non-profit organizations but is available to anyone. Furthermore, Domain names make the name of your websites easy to remember. Imagine if you had to manually enter http://74.125.79.104 to get to Google, that wouldn’t be very easy to remember, would it? That is why domain names is much easier to remember – you can use your name or business name as your domain name, and it looks a lot nicer too. There are indeed numerous uses for Domain names. Usually it is used to establish a unique and strong identity in the competitive Internet industry. Organizations and businesses choose a domain name that corresponds to their company name. Also, domain names can be used to give you a unique and permanent email address which can maximize your chances for a successful web presence and global reach. In order to use a domain name, it must be registered with a registry. During the registration process you will be asked where you want the domain name to "point." This is the IP address of the server where your Web site will be located and there should be a primary and secondary server. A domain name is an alias for the address of your Web site. It can also be an important tool in marketing your pages. Remember this is your Web address so make it easy for your customers to find you. |
