Calls around the world could cost you less

In today's world it is easier than ever to travel to destinations across the globe. If someone you know is overseas, there are cost effective methods of keeping in touch using the internet.

VoIP stands for 'Voice over Internet Protocol', and is described by many as the future of telephone calls. The technology involved in VoIP is called internet protocol, which turns your voice into data which can be sent via your existing broadband network to the person you are calling. The data is transferred back into sound when the receiver picks up the phone, and they will hear your voice as normal. The quality of the call is similar to that of a regular landline service.

There are many different reasons why people sign-up to a VoIP provider. The main advantage with a VoIP service is that it allows consumers to make cost effective international calls, especially with the unlimited call plans that are available.

You don't need to purchase a VoIP phone in order to make VoIP calls. With a VoIP adapter you can make phone-to-phone calls, the same as using a regular landline phone. With a VoIP adapter your existing phone will be transformed into an IP phone. The person you decide to call does not need an IP phone, broadband connection or even a computer.

PC-to-PC calls are usually free to make, but this method does have limitations. The person you wish to call must be signed up to the same VoIP provider and both parties need to have their computers switched on to make a connection.

The third option is to make a PC-to-phone call. Your PC needs to be switched on, to make and receive calls in this manner. This method allows you to call any mobile or landline anywhere in the world from your computer. PC calls using VoIP also allow people to surf the internet and make calls at the same time.

Your original phone number can be kept if you switch to a VoIP provider, although this process usually takes around 10 days. As soon as the number is transferred, the people you call will not notice a thing and you can carry on calling with your original number.
Calls to the emergency services are free using VoIP. However, all calls can only be made if your broadband connection is working properly.

Before taking out a VoIP policy, review your telephone bill and look at the amount you have to pay each month on international telephone calls. Paying less to make international calls is possible with VoIP.

Most VoIP providers have made installation of their technology easy to setup. The simplest way to get started is to plug your adapter into your broadband modem. Plug your telephone into the adapter, and you're done.

People who work from home tend to find VoIP services particularly appealing. If you have clients all over the world, you can save money with a VoIP packages compared to using traditional landline services.
