Treating Excess Weight/Obesity Problems in Pets
| This pet health care information is from an article in one of my professional journals. It is important for owner compliance in any diet recommendations by your veterinarian. The old "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" really holds true. One help in starting the diet program is to get a measuring cup. If you know how much you feed your dog or cat including those snacks, figure starting with 80% of the caloric content of that. The "snacks" now should be the dog food recommended whether a prescription food or just reduction (prescription food better). Give a kibble of that food rather than table goodies. You can figure 10% of the caloric intake for those healthy snacks. Be consistent and don't go back to the feeding habits of old even after the weight loss. Do not feed free choice to a dog or cat that has already proven to be a little bit of a "pig". Measure the food and divide it up into 2-3 meals for the day. Feeding prescription weight loss diets is the best route for a weight loss program. These weight loss diets are boosted with essential nutrients relative to the calories so that when energy (calories) is restricted, the protein, vitamins and minerals are not restricted. Feeding a reduced volume of a maintenance diet for weight loss carries with it a risk of deficiency since these nutrient modifications have not been incorporated and the diet will be fed at these reduced amounts for a long time. In summary, take care of your pet's preventative health care with body weight control, moderate exercise and use of Nutraceuticals like chondroitin/glucosamines as in Dasuquin, Omega 3 FA like Welactin Omega 3 FA, superoxide dismutase like Oxstrin and SAMe as in Denosyl for long term help in all organ functions. |
