How to Buy Individual Health Insurance
| If you do not have health insurance through your employer or union, chances are, it's up to you to find the best individual health insurance plan for your budget and needs. Doing so is not an easy task. There is no shortage of health insurance brokers, but finding the right health insurance plan for you as an individual is particularly challenging. Here is a basic guide for choosing the health insurance plan that is right for you. 1. Compare. Your first step is to shop around. Since health insurance is one of those expenses that you will likely be paying for a very long time it is important to make sure that you find the best deal available. Use an online health insurance comparison site, or simply make a few telephone calls to local health insurance brokers in order to get a comparison of quotes. 2. Determine. Once you have an idea of what is available from various health insurance brokers, and the type of insurance products and costs that are available, it's time to make some more specific decisions. If your plan is to remain on individual insurance coverage for a long period of time, you should consider a policy that has a Health Savings Account (HAS). This allows you to keep a sum of money in a tax-free account for any medical expenses that you have. Of course if you think that your individual coverage needs will only be temporary (one year or less), a short-term insurance policy may be the best financial decision for you. AS you make your determination, select the three to five companies that seem to have the highest ratings, the best reputation, or with which you had the best initial consultation. Of this select group, begin to do some homework. Do they provide coverage for your specific needs? Do they have a sufficient number of doctors in their network that are local to your place of residence? Is the cost affordable? 3. Apply. Once you've answered the questions satisfactorily, and determined the insurance provider who tops your list, give them a call and apply for insurance. This may involve a visit to a doctor for a routine medical examination, or simply require an in-home visit by a nurse or other medical professional. Based on the results of your medical appraisal, your potential health insurance company will draw up a final policy, and a more specific quote. If, for some reason, you are rejected for coverage, you should have other companies to which you can apply for coverage as well. Keep in mind that individual insurance is not just about finding the cheapest policy. It's about finding the best combination of quality coverage with affordability. It is not always best to jump at the cheapest policy, as it may actually be an unwise long-term investment. |
