What is Green Gold or Eco gold?

A natural material associated with wealth, luxury and prestige, it is safe to say that gold is extremely special.

In recent times the process of mining gold has come under much scrutiny; producing many potential problems that can cause irreparable problems to the natural environment.

There are also a number of debates rumbling on about exploitation of natural resources of which gold is very popular.

This has caused many people to campaign for an environmentally friendly product; and ultimately led to the introduction of a different type of gold - green gold called also eco gold.

Many might not be aware of this new type of gold, which is understandable due to the short period of time that has passed since its introduction into the industry.

In short, however, green gold is a material that caters to the contentious jewellery maker and buyer.

Green gold is produced from recycled gold sourced from scrap; this scrap used in the production of eco gold is usually derived from old jewellery and the excess material from the medial and electronics industries.

While it might seem easy for any type of gold to be recycled and recycled again and the subsequently be passed off as eco gold, it isn't.

For green gold to be offered as the eco-friendly product it is, it must have some kind of official written proof pledging that the gold hasn't come from a mine or gold that hasn't been recycled before.

The typical process that gold will undergo to become green gold involves a number of steps. Firstly, the gold that is to be recycled will be melted into flake form; these newly formed flakes will then undergo a refinement process, producing fine eco gold.

By refining the gold it can be ensured that the eco gold doesn't contain any impurities.

Newly created, the fine gold will then be melted down into bars and grains which can be used for a huge variety of different products.

The recycled gold that will be used to create green gold will undergo a rigorous segregation process; by doing this the manufacturer can then ensure that the eventually created eco gold is completely clear of impurity.

A selection process that is also rigorous displays the serious mindset that is adopted in the production of eco gold.

An ethical alternative to the majority of gold types currently available on the precious metal market, it is hoped that with green gold's introduction, it will work to counteract the popularity and the ever increasing demand of mined gold which causes so much damage to the environment.

Green gold similar to standard gold can be used to make a variety of different types of jewellery, enabling jewellery makers to be able to retain a clear conscience while also allowing them to remain safe in the knowledge that they're doing something good for the planet too.

While it is clear that a great deal more needs to be done yet if people are to adopt more environmentally conscious attitudes, the jewellery industry's willingness to welcome eco gold is certainly a positive start.
