| Fun with Children’s Board Games Since children have innate nature to play, children’s board games are made to match every child’s abilities and inclination. It is a great way to have fun with and get together with the entire family. These types of games would be great methods to promote sportsmanship also good, friendly and healthy competition in children. Board games are also good ways to eliminate boredom be it a cold winter day, a bad weather, or just simply staying indoors. Most of children’s board games are simple and requires less reading and counting and most of the time merely based on luck and no need to decide on something. One good example is the Candy Land, one of the first children’s board game which was released in 1949 and is a simple race game. Some choices of children’s board games are the Princess and the Pea, Chutes and Ladders, Pirates on the High, Walt Disney’s Peter Pan, Scooby Doo Gold Rush, Sleeping Beauty, Uncle Wiggily, and Snakes and Ladders. Action Filled War Board Games War board game is a type of board game that portrays either a real or imaginative military operation. These games have varying difficulty which could either be simple or high level simulation and strategy is required. The first known war board game published by Charles Robert in 1954 is the Tactics which has two editions, 25th Anniversary Edition and Tactics II, and it’s game mechanics became the forerunner of all other war board game’s mechanics. The Axis and Allies, designed for 2 to 5 players, has a World War II setting and depends on strategy. The players can take sides on the Axis, which includes Japan and Germany, or the Allies. It includes 299 detailed playing pieces, dice, markers, chips, and IPC. This game has revisions such as Axis and Allies Revised, Axis and Allies Battle of the Bulge, Axis and Allies D-Day, and Axis and Allies Guadalcanal. Another popular game is the Risk, where the player and his opponents struggle to control about 42 territories. Alternative picks for war board games are Memoir ’44, War on Terror, Advance Squad Leader, Stratego, and A House Divided. The Strategic Game of Chess One of the ancient board games that rely on strategy and can only be played by two is the Chess. The goal of the game is to subdue the king piece of the other player where it could no longer move much more capture enemy pieces without getting captured. The game consists of an 8 by 8 checkered game board with a total of 64 squares. It has 2 sets of 16 playing pieces one for each player composed of one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each player alternately takes turns in moving a single piece according to the movement rules except in castling where two pieces can move at the same time. Usually the player with the light colored pieces go first and the piece can land on an empty square or one which is occupied by an opponents piece but will be captured and removed from the game. The rules and regulations of the game chess is maintained by the World Chess Federation. Aiding in Cooperative Board Games Cooperative board games enable players to work for a certain objective that could either be against another set of players or against the game. These games emphasizes on team cooperation, which means winning or losing as a team, rather than individual competition. As the game progresses, events come randomly making it more difficult for the players to win. The Arkham The Scotland Yard, released in the 1980s, is a good example of these games. Players that mimic as detectives team up to look for another player also mimicking as a criminal and everything is set to the streets of London. Horror, also produced in the 1980s, is set in the town of Arkham and players also impersonate as investigators to secure the town from aliens and monsters that pass through the gates and also to close the access. Choices of other cooperative board games are Pandemic, Lord of the Rings, and Shadow Over Camelot. |
