| The Challenging Game of Chess Chess is among the board games that can only be played by two people. Every player’s goal is to “checkmate” the king piece of the opponent where it has no room for moving without being attacked or captured. The game consists of an 8 by 8 checkered game board with a total of 64 squares. Each player has a set of eight pawns, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, one king, and one queen a total of 16 pieces for every player. The players take alternate turns in moving their pieces and it should be noted that only one piece can be moved at a time with an exception on castling where movements of two pieces are allowed. It is a practice that the players with light colored pieces make the opening move and the corresponding piece can land on an empty square or on an enemy occupied provided that the piece can capture the opponent’s. The World Chess Federation maintains the rules and regulations of the game. Board Games Utilizing Physical Abilities Board games of Physical Skills or also known as dexterity games are those that need coordination, physical, and mental abilities to dominate the game. They usually challenge the player or players both physically and mentally since they need finesse, dexterity, and coordination. A good example of this type of games is the140 year old Crokinole which was created by Eckhardt Wettlaufer in Canada. The game which is a combination of English, French, East Indian, and German games consists of a board with three concentric rings corresponding to certain points and checker sized disks. In the game, which is played by two teams and each team consists of two to four players, the checker sized disks are tapped or flipped from the outer edge of the gaming board and with the intention of hitting the board’s center but to hit the opponents disks that are already on the board otherwise the turn is considered foul. Other board games of physical skills include Carabande, Topple, Twister, Carrom, Subboteo, Kerplunk, Jenga, Perfection, and other board games that use physical coordination. Thrills in Auction Board Games In auction board games, where many people are enthused, players give their best to contend other game players in order to dominate the game. One’s vigilance and ingenuity are very much valued in this game in order to win. An Egyptian themed game composed of 2-5 players whose objective is to win by attaining the highest numbers of lot titles after the four rounds or Epochs is done. Vegas Showdown is another auction board game of 3-5 players who contend to have the most famous casino by bidding on board tiles representing casino-related places like lounges and restaurant to win the rights in order to generate income and increase fame. Another known auction board game is Modern Art in which 3-5 players act as buyers and sellers of paintings of five different artists and the winner is the player that has the most value of sold and bought paintings at the end of four rounds. Bidding skills and strategies are essential game mechanics. The Swift of Race Board Games Race board games are among the earliest board game invented which require each player to compete against each other and be the first player to attain the goal. Moving the pieces on the board under certain rules until the player succeeds in bringing the pieces at the end of the goal or finish line is the game mechanic. The most popular among the race games is Backgammon, also a member of the tables family, is a game of luck and strategy which has an objective of removing all of the opponent’s pieces off the board. Played by two individuals, movements can be made in accordance with the roll of the dice. Alternatives of race board games are Ludo, Transformers, European Game of the Goose, and Egyptian Senet. While some board games are very complex such as they would rely on skills, strategy, and even luck; some also are very simple to play and movements are based on the corresponding number after rolling the dice. |
