The best bed
| The best bed I have ever slept in was in a hotel in South Wales. This particular holiday was just for an extended weekend and had been bought with air miles. It was rather special and not the sort of hotel we would usually stay in as it was normally very expensive even for a weekend break. The hotel had a golf course, a gym, a swimming pool and a spa, which were all needed as the booking included a superb cooked breakfast buffet and dinner which was prepared by a world famous chef. The food was excellent, as were the surroundings. Our room was truly magnificent. To say it was huge would be an understatement. It was massive, with a high ceiling and it was furnished immaculately with wonderful antiques that must have been very valuable. The décor was period also. The bathroom was of a similar scale and even the bath and shower were designed to blend in with the overall style. The most magnificent item though was the centrepiece. This was a huge antique four poster bed with beautifully carved columns and surrounded by scarlet curtains. We found out that the bed originally dated from the seventeenth century though it had been renovated somewhat later. On that bed was the most comfortable memory foam mattress on which I have ever slept. Perhaps it was the general ambience of the hotel and especially the room, perhaps it was some spiritual vibration carried through the centuries by that ancient bed, perhaps it was the long walks in the wonderful countryside of that part of South Wales, perhaps it was subsequent indulgent relaxation in the Jacuzzi, perhaps it was the marvellous dinner so perfectly prepared, perhaps it was a little of all these things, but I can honestly say that that night was the best nights sleep of my life. |
