Mattress

A mattress is a mat or pad which is placed on a bed to sleep or lie on it. A mattress can be placed directly on the floor but it is usually placed on top of a platform such as bed to be further from the ground. Previously, mattresses were filled with natural materials such as straw and feathers but modern day mattresses contain an inner spring core or materials such as latex and foam. Mattresses made of natural latex are good for people who have sensitive skin and allergy issues. They do not have allergy producing irritants and this characteristic makes them environment-safe. Mattresses may also be filled with air, water or natural fibres. Coil mattresses are long lasting and don't need any maintenance. Mattresses usually have a thickness from six to eighteen inches. An innerspring mattress consists of the spring core, the foundation and the upholstery layers. An air mattress consists of one or more air chambers instead of springs to provide support. Nowadays, several companies produce adjustable firmness air mattresses. Adjustable air mattresses come in a variety of models. Foam mattresses consist of shape-conforming latex instead of springs to provide support.

A mattress is the first and foremost requirement for a good sleep. A person should be very careful in buying a mattress because a good mattress means peace of mind for a longer period of time. It should be chosen keeping in mind the comfort level of the body. It should give the body better support while sleeping. There are many parameters to determine the quality of a mattress such as pressure distribution, hygiene, support, firmness and long-term stability. Some brands offer mattresses with adjustable firmness levels to accommodate sleepers who share a bed. Adjustable mattresses can be adjusted to rise or recline according to the sleeper's comfort levels. Many factors affect the life span of a mattress. Mattresses should be placed on top of a firm base to prevent sagging. They should be rotated from time to time to ensure even wear. They should not be folded or bended. They should not be soaked; instead, they should be vacuum cleaned or they can be cleaned with mild surface cleanser and a slightly damp cloth. After a certain period, if the mattress does not feel comfortable or leads to body pain or stiffness, it should be replaced. Some symptoms of a worn-out mattress are springs poking through the upholstery layer, sagging or deformity, lumpiness and too much squeaking. Thus no piece of furniture has a greater impact on our whole being than our mattress and so it should be chosen with care and while purchasing one, many things should be taken into account.
