Suggestions for Storing Supplies For Various Hazardous Situations

Do Not Neglect to Prepare for Emergencies!

In this day and age, it is pretty easy to get what we want or need almost immediately. After all, we have 911, ambulances, cell phones, and OnStar. However, when some situations strike, we cannot count on being instantly taken care of. Catastrophic events not only affect our ability to communicate or move around, but they put many other people in the same situation of needing help. Self-sufficiency during such an event is key to survival. Preparing for emergencies (through 72 hour kits and adequate food storage) can mean the difference between life and death for some. Even if your life is not in jeopardy, you will be much more comfortable and safer if you have adequate emergency supplies. Despite all of our societal advances, we cannot forget the importance of preparation.

Changing Your Emergency Supplies with the Seasons

A change in the weather means different needs in an emergency, and your emergency kit should provide for those differing needs. It is important to update your kits twice a year. It is best to do this around March and October. Every kit should have some clothing for each member of the family, and obviously, the type of clothing you need will depend on the time of year. In the winter, the stored clothing should protect from the cold. Do not forget thick socks, gloves, hats, and jackets. Your needs are different for summer weather: you do not want to risk dehydration or overheating, so the clothes you pack should be lighter. If you choose, you can make some minor changes in food depending on the season. For example, you may want heavier, more sustaining foods in the winter and extra water in the summer. During the summer, you might want to include sunscreen and bug spray. Keep bins marked “winter” and “summer” by your emergency kits, and simply switch out the contents depending on the season for an easy update.

Essential Additions to a Store-Bought 72 Hour Kit

Sometimes the simplest way to prepare your emergency kit is to purchase one that is pre-assembled. Keep in mind, though, that no store-bought kit will contain all of the necessities your family needs. Prescription medicine that any member of your family takes is one example of an item that will need to be added to your kit. If anyone has an allergy, you will need to ensure that any food in the kit can be consumed safely by them. You may want to consider adding an extra pair of glasses or contacts for those in your family that need vision correction. Obviously, very young children, pregnant or nursing mothers, and the elderly each have specific needs. Do not forget to pack a change of clothes for the family. Also, no store-bought kit will include copies of your most important documents, so add those as well.

Some Surprising 72 Hour Kit Essentials

Space is limited in an emergency kit, and there will probably be a lot of things you wish you had enough room to include. Aside from the obvious basics (food, medical supplies, etc. ), there are a few necessities you may not have considered. Luckily, they do not take up a lot of space. Some money is a good idea for any emergency kit. You may need to buy something at a time when credit cards are not working. Do not forget to include copies documents that you will want on hand in an emergency (insurance papers and property titles, social security cards and/or passports, and wills are a couple examples). You do not know if you will need some or all of these in an emergency situation, and the originals may be inaccessible or damaged. Another good idea is to include some plastic bags. In an emergency situation, you may be given extra supplies or find something important, and one of the few ways you can waterproof it in that situation is to stick it in a plastic bag.
