Ideas concerning Having Supplies With Many Kinds of Emergency Occurrences
| Getting Your Kids Ready for an Emergency Every parent wants their child to know what to do if a natural disaster hits. It is easy to worry about scaring your children—but preparing them is their best defense against fear if something does occur. Teach your children where you keep all of your emergency supplies, and make sure they can reach them. Show your children, and practice with them, where to go when an emergency occurs. Many organizations provide classes where you and your children can learn more about first aid. Children often enjoy the process of building a 72 hour kit, so be sure to involve them in that project. Often children have great suggestions that adults do not think of, and there is obviously much they can learn from you. The Importance of Recreational Materials with Emergency Supplies Think about what life would actually be like in a disaster situation. Chances are, you are pretty limited in terms of where to go or what to do. Of course, you are also worried and probably somewhat upset. At these times, it is nice to have some form of distraction, or something you can do. Adults might enjoy a card game, some books or magazines, or crossword puzzles. If you have children, you will absolutely want to pack some small toys or activity books. These will greatly help in keeping them, and you, calm. Though these items are important, do not take up too much space with them—in the end, you would probably prefer to have more food over an extra toy. The Personalized Essentials for Your Emergency Kit Sometimes the simplest way to prepare your emergency kit is to purchase one that is pre-assembled. No matter how great the kit you choose is, however, there are items you should add to meet the individual needs of your family members. For example, if anyone in your family needs a specific medication regularly, that should be included. You do not necessarily need a lot, but a week’s worth is definitely a good idea. Be careful if a member of your family has allergies: check the food and medication included in the kit and make sure they are ok. You may want to consider adding an extra pair of glasses or contacts for those in your family that need vision correction. The very old, very young, pregnant, and/or nursing members of your household will each need a specialized set of supplies (diapers, for example). Do not forget to pack a change of clothes for the family. Also, no store-bought kit will include copies of your most important documents, so add those as well. The Importance of Emergency Preparation In some ways, our society has grown used to obtaining things instantly, from news reports to food to help in a crisis. The Internet, cell phones, and programs like OnStar are all ways we can do so. There are occurrences, however, when life does not work out this nicely. Natural disasters damage infrastructure, shut down communication, and create a huge group of people in need. We must understand the need to be self-sufficient during an emergency. If everyone takes simple steps such as preparing 72 hour kits, storing adequate food and water, and developing action plans for emergencies, many lives can be saved. Thousands more will be spared uncomfortable or medically dangerous situations. Despite all of our societal advances, we cannot forget the importance of preparation. |
