How to maintain your garden

If you are passionate about gardening you will know that large or small, maintaining it is important no matter the size. Even though many people will think a larger garden would take more time and effort, small gardens need just as much love, care and attention. Throughout the article there will be hints, tips and explanations of what tools you will need and are best suited to your garden and how and when to use them.

Make sure that when you are using the garden tools to keep on top of your garden you are using safety equipment especially with the power tools such as the petrol hedge trimmer and petrol chainsaw. Even the most simple safety equipment such as gloves should be worn to prevent splinters.

Larger Gardens

If you have a considerably large garden with a variety of plant types and a lot of land then the garden tools which are best suited to you will depend on how much of what flower and plants you have. If you have more bushes and trees then you will need more power tools such as:

• Petrol hedge trimmer
Petrol chainsaw
• Garden leaf blowers
• Petrol lawn mowers
• Garden shredders
• Long reach pole pruners
• Multi tool machinery
• Grass trimmers
• Brush cutters

But if you have more flower beds and ground plants then you will need more hand tools such as:

• Loopers
• Garden shears
• Shovel
• Pick
• Fork
• Spade
• Hose
• Feed and seed
• Pruning tools
• Rakes
• Hoe
• Trowels
• Hand forks

If you have both in your garden and there isn't really a majority then you will need a bit of both hand tools and power tools. You should choose which you think will come in the most helpful and purchase them first rather than getting all the types of garden tools.

Small Gardens

With smaller gardens you may need the same tools as if it was a large garden. The only piece of machinery which may be different is the size of your lawn mower.
Otherwise refer back to the larger gardens list of garden tools to see which would suit you, if you have either mainly trees and bushes or small plants which need more delicate hand tools.

Maintaining tools

One of the most important things is to keep your garden tools in a good condition. This will make your job a lot easier and will stop you from having to keep purchasing new tools.

When using the garden tools you should make sure they are clean and free off dirt, water and other bits and pieces. Do this after every time you use them to prevent rusting and other damage which may stop you from using them in the future. Keep your garden tools in a dry place and off the ground, also having a towel in their storage place will be great so you can dry them off before hand. Applying linseed oil is great for keeping the hand tools lubricated making easier use. If your garden tools have wooden handles it's a good idea to sand them down if they begin to splinter as this may be uncomfortable for you when using. Your hand tools may become blunt so sharpening them when they begin to go dull is great to keep them in pristine condition. If they begin to go rusty then you can remove this with a metal brush.

Maintaining all types of gardens

Weeds are a lot more dangerous than people think. Many of us either ignore them or don't get rid of them properly. Weeds can kill the other flowers and plants in your garden and take over if you don't keep on top of them. They take nutrients from the soil and plants and can spread diseases throughout your garden. So one of the first, most important actions to make is to remove and maintain the area of where the weeds are.
If you keep track of which plants you have planted in a note book, when you planted them and how they are progressing you can make sure that they are in the correct environment or if they need moving to a different spot in your garden. This is great for future references and learning more about your plants.

It is always good first thing in the morning to water your garden as well as doing this at night. It gives you time to clean the debris and rubbish if there is any. Also this gives you a chance to see the condition of the plants and if they have any pests. If you see that any plant is suffering or has pests then get rid of these as soon as possible.

The last thing you can do to maintain your garden to a healthy condition is to remove dead leaves, and flower heads, prune bushes and plants back to encourage growth, mow the lawn and feed it and check for ripe fruit that can be removed. This is just general maintenance to help you have that perfect garden you have always wanted, where you can relax and enjoy the environment which will encourage the habitation of wildlife.
