Electrician Courses That Prepare The Aspiring Career Changer
| The field of electrical work is in need of more certified electricians. The field for electricians is set to grow for the next eight years. To study to become an electrician, there are several educational routes to take. There are courses available online, at local technical colleges and your local community college. If you possess a genuine interest in electrical concepts becoming an electrician is probably a good career choice for you. Two-thirds of electricians work in new construction and one-third work in the maintenance and repair of electric systems. Ten percent of electricians become business owners hiring other electricians to complete the work as they continue to expand the business. Most electricians start out by learning basic concepts and continue their training as apprentices. Electrician courses begin with learning electrical safety and the tools needed in the electrician's field. The student will learn about electrical circuits and the federal, state and local rules for safety and the regulations. They will also learn about the power tools and measuring instruments. Commercial electric wiring can be studied as well and residential wiring. This course teaches grounding techniques, raceway panel board installation, over-current protection and industrial wiring through the examination of building plans. Electrician courses teach blueprint reading. The National Electrical Code manual is used to learn national safety standards for wiring. Circuit analysis, branch circuit calculations, load calculations and electrical theory are studied in this class and lab work is usually available to give students hands-on exposure. Courses may also include Photovoltaic Theory and Systems (PV). This will give the electrical student a basic understanding of solar energy installation. The student learns about the types of photovoltaic cell and how to form modules. The National Electrical Code is used to design and install PV systems and the student can take the education from this course to pass the North American Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge test. Electrician courses are available for at home study online or in a classroom setting on college campuses, technical colleges, community colleges, etc. The manner of initial study is not as important as practical use of those newly learned skills as a journeyman in the field. The student may choose to apprentice with a certified electrician running wires and doing other simple work while learning from a professional how to be a certified electrician. Apprenticeship can last as many as 7 years. The apprenticeship length is up to the student and depends on what line of work they are ultimately planning to pursue. To be a successful electrician the student must get a good education and train with certified professional electricians in the field. |
